Services

Services to keep your pet happy

The Lynton Veterinary Group offer experienced veterinary surgeons and nursing teams to provide a full range of services to our clients. We believe preventative healthcare and the early diagnosis of minor problems are the key to a healthy pet, helping you and your pet to enjoy a long life together. Our team are happy to provide advice when choosing your new pet, and throughout the whole of their lives.

Veterinary surgeons are available by appointment to diagnose and treat illness as well as carry out a variety of health care procedures. We understand that continuity of care is important to you and therefore we endeavour to make sure follow-up appointments are with the same veterinary surgeon. We also offer a range of specialist appointments, for example acupuncture.

When attending your appointment we ask that you keep dogs on a collar and lead in the waiting area, whilst cats and other small animals must be in a secure basket at all times. Nervous animals may be left in the car until the veterinary surgeon is ready for your appointment and should you require any assistance please let reception know.

Home Visits

‘Due to Covid-19, some restrictions may apply to this service, please contact the Practice to find out more.’

The Lynton Veterinary Group always aim to provide home visits where necessary and when circumstances require such a service. This can be especially so when a patient has reached the end and that final difficult decision has been made.

Arranging a visit

Where possible, please phone before 10am so that we can provide an approximate arrival time that does not clash with our other commitments. Nearer to the visit, one of our team may be able to give you a more accurate time.

Pet Dentistry

Pet dentistry

Dental problems are very common in pet animals, and painful abscesses and extractions can often be avoided by preventative ultrasonic scaling and polishing, thus prolonging dental health. Lynton Veterinary Group routinely examine the condition of your pet’s teeth during their annual booster and health check, and will advise you of any dental work that may be necessary.

As with your dentist we recommend that you visit us every 6 months for a FREE check up.

Dental procedures

When teeth are in need of extracting we have a range of specific dental surgical instruments and high speed drills (very similar to those which you find in your own dentist) to make this process as quick and painless as possible. Dental procedures in cats and dogs will normally require a general anaesthetic.

Supply of Medicines & Food

Supply of Medicine

Most medicines are dispensed during consultations and after examinations by the veterinary surgeon. Current legislation requires us to carry out regular re-examinations to confirm the usefulness of the medication, the accuracy of the dosage and the absence of any significant side effects.

Most long term conditions will require a veterinary re-examination at no more than 3 month intervals, but this will always be an individual judgement of your veterinary surgeon.

Repeat Prescription Medicine

Please telephone your surgery to order any repeat medicines. We would ask for 48 hours notice to ensure that the medicines are in stock and available for collection.

Lynton Veterinary Group is able to provide written prescriptions on request but will require at least 48 hours notice. Please also note that there is a charge for this service.

Call our surgeries to order any repeat medicines. One of our Reception team will be happy to check the availability and cost of any item.

Food and Accessories

Most foods and a variety of pet supplies such as cat litter, dog collars and beds etc can be ordered through reception, for collection from the Practice. If you order before 4pm we would usually expect delivery of the item(s) to the Practice by 4pm the following day.

Surgery & Diagnostics

Pet surgery & diagnostics

At Lynton Veterinary Group, all three of our Practices have full operational facilities and post operation hospitalisation, so in most cases you and your pet will not need to travel to unfamiliar places. Our experienced team of veterinary surgeons are able to carry out a full range of operations including, for example, neutering, internal procedures and orthopaedics.

Pre-op

We understand that you may be concerned about leaving your pet with us for a general anaesthetic, however, we use the most up to date and safest techniques.

Lynton Veterinary Group thoroughly check every animal prior to any anaesthetic, and recommend pre-anaesthetic blood tests for older or sick animals. We use the safest and most appropriate combination of anaesthetic drugs based on your pet's body weight, condition and the procedure being carried out.

Operations and post-op recovery

During the operation a dedicated nurse monitors your pet’s heart rate, breathing and pain levels and adjusts the anaesthetic accordingly, and with other monitoring equipment available ensures the highest possible care of your pet. Intravenous fluid therapy may also be used where appropriate.

After the operation, your pet will be monitored whilst they recover, before being allowed home.

Travel Advice

'Due to current Covid-19 restrictions and BREXIT on 31st December 2020, some of these rules will be changing – for more information, please stay up-to-date with our Blog.'

Lots of our clients like to travel with their pets and we are pleased to offer a comprehensive service for pet passports or pet exports. Veterinary surgeons at our 3 Practices can act on behalf of DEFRA to authorise and complete the relevant documents.

There are some diseases your pet may be at risk from if travelling to mainland Europe, especially Southern Europe. Please contact the Practice and we will be happy to advise on the best preventative measures to minimise the risk of your pet contracting any of these diseases.

Pet Passports

Since 2000, the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) has allowed cats, dogs and ferrets to enter the UK from certain countries without having to be placed in quarantine. This means you can now take pets on holiday with you, subject to the conditions of the scheme. Currently only dogs, cats and ferrets are covered by PETS. Animals resident in the UK can now travel to most European countries as well as many more distant destinations. For a list of participating countries or for further information on passports or exports please go to the DEFRA website.

What do I need to get a passport for my pet?

  • Your animal must be over 12 weeks of age
  • A microchip is implanted if your pet does not already have one
  • A rabies vaccination is given after the microchip is implanted (this can all be done in one visit)
  • A passport can then be issued
  • Your pet passport is valid for travel 21 days after the rabies vaccine is given. As long as the rabies vaccination is kept up-to-date, the 21 day wait will not apply after subsequent vaccinations
  • Currently our vaccines have a 3 year licence, but please be aware that, if living in certain countries for more than 3 months, then yearly boosters may be required
  • Before entering the UK, all pet dogs (including assistance dogs) must be treated for tapeworm. The treatment must be administered by a vet not less than 24 hours and not more than 120 hours (1-5 days) before its scheduled arrival time in the UK.

Exports

An export differs from a passport in that it is valid for a one way journey from the UK to another country and is appropriate for countries not in the PET scheme eg Brazil, Israel. Export requirements vary widely between different countries and the first step you must take is to contact DEFRA to fill in an application for export. This application will also have a section to put our details on it so we can carry out the necessary steps to issue completed export certification.

We would strongly advise you start this several months before you intend to travel as export requirements sometimes involve several blood tests and treatments which need to be administered at specific intervals prior to the export date. Once you have filled out your application for export it is sent back to DEFRA. The export paperwork is then sent directly to us for completion. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions regarding exports.

Vaccinations, Neutering and Microchipping

Vaccinations

There are many diseases that your pet may come in to contact with during its life, and to prevent the most serious of these we recommend that you vaccinate your pet. We offer a range of vaccinations for your dog, cat or rabbit and each of our vaccines has been carefully selected and stored to offer maximum protection. After an initial vaccination course we recommend that Annual Booster vaccinations are given to ensure maximum immunity is maintained.

Neutering

Neutering your pet involves removing their reproductive organs, and as well as preventing unwanted pregnancies there are many other longer-term health and behavioural benefits. Our veterinary staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have about these benefits and when you should consider neutering your pet.

Why spay your female pet?

Bitches and queens have changes in behaviour associated with their ovarian cycles and can often show some discomfort. They also suffer from an increased risk of certain diseases, such as mammary tumours and potential fatal infections of the uterus.

Why castrate your male pet?

Male dogs can show socially unacceptable behaviour traits such as mounting and roaming. By castrating dogs we remove the source of the behaviour - testosterone. Castration will not change the personality of your dog, it will simply settle down his male characteristics. Castration will also prevent diseases of the prostate gland and the appearance of certain tumours.

Tom cats will become very aggressive towards other cats and will mark their territory - your home - by spraying urine against walls and furniture and door posts. They are also at risk of straying, and picking up potentially fatal diseases such as FIV and FeLV.

Microchipping

Every year, many thousands of pets unfortunately go missing, but should this happen, there is a simple and reliable way to increase your chances of being reunited with each other. A tiny electronic microchip (the size of a grain of rice) can be injected simply and easily into your pet. We routinely offer this service, usually when your pet is being neutered of vaccinated, but it can be done anytime.

Stray pets are routinely scanned for the presence of a microchip by vets, rescue kennels and dog wardens. If one is found, this allows us to access your details and hopefully reunite you with your pet. Keep your pet safe from all life's bumps and bruises by getting in touch with the Lynton Veterinary Group. Call one of our practices now.

X-ray & Ultrasound

X-rays

Lynton Veterinary Group have full X-ray facilities at all of our practices. X-rays are extensively used as they are an easy way to examine large areas of the patient non-invasively and can provide a large amount of information, whether it is a suspected broken bone or a diseased internal organ.

Ultrasound

Often used alongside other procedures, Ultrasound allows us to obtain other useful images of a number of body systems and can provide us with additional diagnostic information. It can also be used very successfully for pregnancy scanning. Ongoing specialised training ensures a high level of expertise.
